CSC CEO Mike Laphen

CSC Chairman, President and CEO Mike Laphen was a featured speaker at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Jan. 28, 2010, and cloud computing was a major focus of his comments.

The 60-minute technology talk — featuring plenty of cloud discussion — is now available for streaming online.

Can cloud computing make the world a better place?

Laphen appeared on a panel alongside Google CEO Eric Schmidt, German Minister for Economics and Technology Rainer Brüderle, and Accenture CEO and Chairman William D. Green and others, in which the participants discussed future implications of current technology trends. The panel was moderated by Fortune Magazine journalist Adam Lashinsky.

Not surprisingly, Laphen pointed out the impact that cloud computing is already having and will continue to have on businesses and governments of all sizes.

Laphen’s comments start at approximately the 17-minute mark. But don’t miss out on Brüderle’s thoughts on how technology will help better protect the environment, or Green’s thoughts about how technology will change delivery systems across industries — especially education.

As Laphen describes, cloud computing will also have a significant impact on healthcare. He explains how CSC has been working with the state of Massachusetts, using private cloud to help the state’s residents obtain and maintain their policies and records for health insurance.

CSC has also been working with the National Institutes of Health, Laphen said. The NIH private cloud is being used for testing drug safety, which requires the analysis of massive amounts of data to detect potentially dangerous patterns. That private cloud is based on web service such as offered by Amazon.

“We’re going to see a huge transformation here,” Laphen said. “It’s just the beginning.”

What do you think? Will cloud computing benefit health care? Can it deliver on these promises?
