Speaking Of Cloud Security And Trust …

We’re taking some initiative at the blog today and declaring it Cloud Security & Trust Week. We realize it’s not quite a revolutionary thought, nor big news, but it’s a theme that’s trending again and it’s a topic taken seriously in these parts.

And more and more, it’s not a conversation topic exclusive to corporate IT executives. Cloud computing is now a mandatory consideration for most organizations. We’ve written on the blog before about how enterprises not normally associated with computing are finding payoffs in virtualization. A recent post on how the United States Golf Association has adopted cloud computing comes to mind.

Add to these real-world examples the NBA’s Boston Celtics, who’ve stopped talking man-to-man defense to talk about cloud security.

Microsoft just announced last week the availability of Silverlight 4, the plans for which were announced back at Microsoft’s PDC 2009 event in November. This video of Brian Boruff, then CSC’s VP of Cloud Computing and now transitioning to cloud business as VP of Emerging Markets for CSC, was filmed at the conference and also recently made its way to the internet airwaves.

Video: The USGA Is In The Cloud | Jessica Carroll At IDC

November 23rd, 2009 By Brian Boruff

The global team that makes up CSC Trusted Cloud Services recently attended the IDC Cloud Computing Conference on Nov. 4, in New York City. It was a great event, made all the better by the diverse speakers, including the one you see in this video.

Jessica Carroll is the Director of IT at the United States Golf Association. You might not immediately think of the USGA as a technology enterprise, but as Ms. Carroll explains in the clip, even golfers can benefit from cloud computing.

She explains that, several years ago, the USGA dived into the Internet in its outreach to a global audience. The organization’s experience with Microsoft Live Meeting was a positive first foray into cloud computing. Carroll says that the Microsoft BPOS application helped them present education consistently and made it easier for people to attend — without adding any infrastructure to the USGA.

Her concerns in the future, she says, will be preventing “cloud sprawl,” or too much variation from too many vendors in the various systems the USGA implements. Smart decisions and consolidation will be the goal and, even with concerns, she says she sees many benefits to reap in cloud computing.

In blog posts to come, we’ll have more conversation from the IDC event, which included CSC VP of Cloud Computing Brian Boruff as a speaker.

Did you attend IDC? What do you think of the USGA’s take on cloud computing?

Video: CSC-Microsoft BPOS Global Reseller Agreement

October 29th, 2009 By Brian Boruff

CSC is a global reseller of the Microsoft BPOS (Business Productivity Online Suite) application services.

The great assets and skills of CSC are combined with the great power and market reach of Microsoft through this agreement. We’re going to market together to bring a lot of clients into this service, while taking into consideration the regulatory and security issues that need attention in a hosted environment.

We’re pleased to be one of the few organizations capable of doing that around the globe, and we’ll be building our Orchestration Services on top of that — more to come on that in the future.

This is the start of a great journey.
